Chieftan Mews changed his Twitter display picture from clipclopclipclop.jpg to ccccc.jpg on April 1st prior to his second Q&A

The image shows a picture of a Tamiya 1:35 Scale Model Kit for a Chieftain Mk.5 Tank:

Tamiya is a Japanese company famous for their plastic model kits and accessories. Founded in 1946 they celebrated 50 years of producing scale models of military units in 2012.

The image appears to have been taken from ModelCars.com where the kit is on sale for $20.60 USD (Plus postage).

Tamiya provide a very detailed history of the Tank on the site:

The Chieftain Tank is one of the best known of the present generation of battlefield weapons, and is one of the most heavily armoured and armed fighting behicles in service anywhere today. It has not been without its detractors or critics, however, and there has been a running debate by military commentators for several years past on the relative merits of the British Chieftain Tank compared with the main battle tanks of other great military powers- the United States, Soviet Russia, France and West Germany – whose present equivalent designs afford a fasinating contrast with Chieftain in many key aspects.

The Chieftain, however, was developed as a result of British tank experience in World War II and after, and reflects the priorities which British tank men felt to be the most important terms of firepower, protection and mobility. British tank development in World War II resulted in the famous Centurion, which first appeared in 1945 in the closing weeks of the war. The Centurion, together with the Soviet T-34/85, and German Panther, represented the culmination of thinking (arising from actual experience) which pointed the need for a “universal” tank had, meanwhile, been disturbed by the appearance of the Soviet Josef Stalin II tank in 1945, with a powerful 122mm gun.

In the Immediate post-war years it became clear that Soviet Russia and her East European allies (later the Warsaw Pact powers) posed the greatest threat to Western Europe in any future conflict, and this led, subsequently, to the setting up of NATO. If war broke out, much of the initial fighting at least would take place in Europe, notably in Northern Germany, and Britain’s armoured divisions were either located in or earmarked for deployement to Germany. The backbone of the Soviet armoured divisions in the 1950′s was the formidable JS-III and its T-1- derivative, both with the 122mm gun, which could out shoot the 20 pdr. (84 mm)gun of the early service versions of Centurion. To strengthen the firepower of the Centurion, therefore, the British developed an introduced a “heavy tank gun”, the conqueror with a 120mm gun specifically to match the Stalin. The Centurion at this time was classed as a “medium gun tank”. The Conqueror was unsatisfactory in many ways; it was very heavy, noisy, relatively slow, and made an extra logistic liability for relatively few vehicles. By 1066 the Conqueror was withdrawn from service and an up gunned Centurion with 105 mm gun was in service.

You can read the rest over at ModelCars.com.

The ccccc is probably for 5 x Chieftain being that it was a Mk.5 model.

While Mk.5 is similar to Mk1 and Mk2 from the 2nd disc of In Rainbows the abbreviation is short for ‘Mark’ and used in a number of different fields including the British Military, Cars and Musical Instruments.

In 2009 Radiohead donated Mk2 for a ad for the National Coalition for the Homeless, you can watch it on Youtube here.

#5/10: What’s on agenda at the World Policy Forum in Yaroslavl? Congrats to PJ for answering last week, you won a prize.

Sep 8, 2011:

@ChieftanMews: <Abbatoir noises> #5/10: What’s on agenda at the World Policy Forum in Yaroslavl? Congrats to PJ for answering last week, you won a prize.

The 5th of a series of 10 weekly questions tweeted by Chieftan Mews the World Policy Forum is a annual international conference first held in 2009 in Yaroslavl, Russia.

Wikipedia describes it as:

..a permanent international platform for on-going intellectual discussions and practical definition of directions of development of the modern state and its role in ensuring security and stability of the modern world.

The Forum is traditionally held in Yaroslavl (Russia) under the auspices of President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev.

( Source: Wikipedia )

Each year’s conference is focused on a main topic and 3-4 sections, in 2011 this was ‘The modern state in the age of social diversity’ and ran on 7-8th of September.

The 3 sections where ‘Democratic institutions in multiethnic societies’, ‘The rich and the poor: where is justice?’ and ‘Global security and local conflicts’.

You can read more about it at the offical website or on Wikipedia

The second part of the tweet ‘Congrats to PJ for answering last week, you won a prize.’ is directed towards PJ Harvey who had won a Mercury Music Prize on the 6th of September for ‘Let England Shake’ making her the first artist to win it twice.

Oddly enough it was reported on Digital Spy that sales of her album increased by 1,190% on Amazon overnight following the win.

Previously on August 25th Chieftan Mew’s tweeted a link to the videoclip for The Words that Maketh Murder from Let England Shake along with the message “I’m still banished” you can read more about that here.

<Abbatoir noises> appears on a Kid A era Tour Poster titled ‘Fear Stalks the Land’ along with the lines Mobiles Chirping’ and ‘Our Name is Legion’ which Mew’s has also used in tweets (25 years. Jericho. Friday. Woods. Saturday. Living. Project. Phil’s harmonica. Ago. Carrots&sticks. Bluebook. Mobile Devices & Birds Chirp. ).

Two of 5 Tweets sent on February 23rd that where deleted within 24 hours. The first tweet is addressed to Phillip Selway and Clive Dreamer who is currently working with Radiohead as a additional drummer for The King of Limbs.

As reported on The King of Limbs Part 2 there is a hidden message in the selection of capital letters.

It is as follows:

B A K B A K

S I S I

It relates to a recent SISI BAKBAK remix of Hold On by SBTRKT

This remix has recently causing some confusion in the press for Sisi BakBak being a possible alias for Thom Yorke.

Consequence Of Sound gives the following info:

SBTRKT will release his new single “Hold On” digitally on February 21st, and as a limited edition 12” in a deluxe lenticular sleeve on May 8th. It comes backed by the instrumental ”Rise to Freedom”, along with a remix of “Hold On” attributed to Sisi BakBak, who (through powers of Sherlock-like deduction) is probably Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.

According to KEXP’s Cheryl Waters, who premiered the track, the remixer is soon playing Seattle’s Key Arena (that’s where Radiohead is playing in April.) Also, as Pitchfork points out, BBC’s Rob da Bank tweeted (via P4k): “listening to the thom yorke mix of @SBTRKT for the 18th time…unbeatable!”” So there you go.

( Source : Check Out SBTRKT Hold On SISI BAKBAK Remix )

As yet there has been no official word to deny or confirm that Thom is Sisi Bakbak

Chieftan Mews has a long history of tweeting messages directly related to the band (even if in a round about fashion). From this we can take the message as confirmation that Sisi Bakbak is indeed Thom Yorke who has a long history of involvement with DJs including work with Modeselektor, UNKLE, DJ Shadow, Flying Lotus, Burial, Four-Tet and MF Doom.

Thom also organised the TKOL RMX 1234567 remix collection of The King of Limbs.

In somewhat-related news Modeselektor will be releasing a special Deluxe Tour edition of Monkeytown on the 16 March 2012 which features a additional bonus track co-written by Thom Yorke. It may be Dull Hull from the B-Side of the limited edition Shipwreck single (which you can listen to here) or it could be something new.

** UPDATE 20-March 2012 : it is Dull Hull, you can read the full tracklisting here **

While the first edition of Modeselektor’s third studio album “Monkeytown” was already far from standard, this new and updated deluxe package offers an even more extensive collectors item.

Released in the middle of the second leg of the album tour, this Deluxe Tour Edition of the album features an entire bonus cd filled with all instrumentals from the album and an additional bonus track co-written by Thom Yorke (Radiohead). The bonus DVD comes with all 3 official videos for the songs “Shipwreck” with Thom Yorke, “Evil Twin” and “Berlin” feat. Miss Platnum as well as extensive live footage. Filmed at the Warehouse Project in Manchester you will find 7 songs from the live show as well as a 20min interview added as additional video bonus material.

Alltogether about 3 hours of Modeselektor entertainement.

( Source: Monkeytown Records )

According to their website the Deluxe Tour Edition is limited to only 3000 copies, you can order it here.

Now for the rest of the tweets!

Pre-tense could be read as a reference to ‘The Present Tense’ a currently unreleased song that made it’s debut at the 2009 Latitude Festival being played solo by Thom Yorke. A fan favourite you can listen to it here.

Whoopie has two meanings, one is to celebrate in a (usually) drunken fashion, the second is to have sex. Considering Thom Yorke’s reaction to people ahem.. ‘making woopie’ to Radiohead it’s more likely to be the former then the latter.

blindfold is a reference to Running Blind the title of Phillip Selway’s recent E.P.

Mew’s had previously retweeted a message from SandbagUK informing of a limited edition release of the E.P. signed by the man himself, It is now sold out but you can still buy Phil’s debut album Familial here.

The second of the two tweets appears to be about computer games.

‘patria’ is a Latin word for ‘Homeland’ or ‘Fatherland’.

February 23rd was the release date for ‘Wargame: European Escalation’ described as ‘a real-time strategy video game developed by Eugen Systems set in the years 1975-1985.’

Wiki gives the following:

It features large maps up to 150 square kilometres in size. It can have up to 100 million scenery objects. Players can command 361 unique units. [3]. Playable factions include the Warsaw Pact which is subdivided into the Soviet Union, Communist Poland, East Germany, and Czechoslovakia. On the other side is NATO, which is subivided into the United States of America, United Kingdom, France and West Germany. Each country has its own arsenal of units, and players can choose various units from the four subfactions of the side they are playing on, unlocking better units through game progression.

Gamespot has a good range of coverage of it Here

While Mew’s seems to be referencing that game in particular it doesn’t actually mean he’s played it. Many websites and gaming platforms such as Steam present advertisements for upcoming games that appear when logging in.

For example is a screenshot of the game advertised in Steam’s main page on the 5th of March.

Screenshot of Wargame: European Escalation advertised on Steam.

Previously on the 3rd of June 2010 Jonny Greenwood posted a Office Chart to Dead Air Space unique in listing a selection of Games instead of music which he addressed to “all the nerds who are marveling, like me, at Red Dead Redemption”

Red Dead Redemption is the title of a game by Rockstar San Diego released exclusively on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the 21st of May 2010 in the UK. Awarded numerous Game of the Year titles it’s considered to be a modern classic and raised the bar for open world games.

(Source: Wikipedia )

Wiki describes it as:

Set in 1911, during the decline of the American Old West. The game follows John Marston, a former outlaw, while he sets out to hunt down his former gang members. Marston’s wife and son are taken hostage by the government in ransom for his services as a bounty hunter. Having no other choice, he sets out to bring his three former gang members to justice.

You can read (or watch) a review of it here.

For the curious the rest of Jonny’s list was:

Braid (various)
Marathon (Mac)
Goldeneye (N64)
Elite (BBC Micro)
Cave Story (various)
Ico (PS2)
Red Dead Redemption (PS3)
Zelda Ocarina of Time (N64)
Zelda Twighlight Princess (Wii)
Half Life 1 and 2 (Mac, PS3)

“New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems.”

Aug, 26, 2011:

RT: @DJ_AM: “New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems.”

Chieftan Mews re-tweeted this while Radiohead where in New York to record a taping of Saturday Night Live and The Colbert Report along with a two suprise gigs at the Roseland Ballroom on Wednesday the 28th and 29th on September.

The tweet was the final message from Adam Goldstein aka “DJ AM” and originally from the 26th of August 2009, exactly 2 years from when Mew’s retweeted it.

Wiki gives the following description of DJ AM:

American DJ, remixer, record producer and musician better known as DJ AM. Goldstein was a member of the rock band Crazy Town, co-owner of a management company called Deckstar and worked on albums for Papa Roach and Will Smith, among others. He was a frequent collaborator with Travis Barker of Blink-182 and appeared on several television series.

Goldstein was found dead at his New York City apartment at 5:22 p.m. EDT on Friday, August 28, 2009, from an apparent drug overdose after friends, unable to reach Goldstein for a few days, became concerned and called police.

You can read more about him on Wiki and no doubt countless other places on the web.

The Tweet itself is a line from New York New York by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five released in 1983. You can watch a video of it here.
The rest of the lyrics are:

New York New York, big city of dreams
And everything in New York ain’t always what it seems
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law and I know my way around

Too much, too many people, too much (aha-ha)
Too much, too many people, too much, Raaah!

A castle in the sky, one mile high
Built to shelter the rich and greedy
Rows of eyes, disguised as windows
Looking down on the poor and the needy
Miles of people, marching up the avenue
Doin’ what they gotta do, just to get by
I’m living in the land of plenty and many
But I’m damn sure poor and I don’t know why

Too much, too many people, too much
Too much, too many people, too much!

A man’s on a ledge, says he’s gonna jump
People gather round, said, “He won’t he’s just a chump”
’Cause he lost his job, then he got robbed
His mortgage is due and his marriage is through
He says he ain’t gonna pay no child support
Because the bitch left him without a second thought
He got nothing to eat, no shoes on his feet
She even left his clothes out in the street
He keeps hearing noises when he’s at home
He always hears voices when he’s all alone
His wife took the kids, the car and the crib
In this man’s world, so much for Women’s Lib

New York New York big city of dreams
But everything in New York ain’t always what it seems
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law, and I know my way around

Down in the Village, you might think I’m silly
But you can’t tell the women from the men sometimes
They’re sugar and spice and everything nice
But when you get ‘em home ain’t no telling what you find
Right next door is a little old man
I seen him eating dog food out of a can
He says, “I got to eat, when I can’t afford meat
I barely can stand, on my own two feet
I got a bad habit and I just can’t break it
Something’s on my mind and I just can’t shake it
I need some time, and I want some space
I gotta get away from the human race”

Too much, too many people, too much (aha-ha)
Too much, too many people, too much! Raaah!

Staring at a skyscraper reaching into heaven
When over in the ghetto I’m livin in hell
Just play ball or be an entertainer
’Cause niggaz like me can’t read too well
Nobody loves me, nobody cares
I dreamed about a life but I’m livin in a nightmare
Paranoid schizo, set back, snowbound
Bad news psycho, heart attack, breakdown!

Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh
Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh
Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh
Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, HUH!

If only I could sleep just ten more minutes
I might find the strength to make another day
If I didn’t have to get up and do my thing
I would probably sleep my whole life away
I messed up a nice dream, somethin’ bout ice cream
Whipped cream, fruits and a cherry on top
Now I gotta get up and face the world, huh
The pressure is on, It ain’t never gonna stop
I sho’ gotta learn to use my mind
I don’t wanna be kissing nobody’s behind
Just standin’ on line lookin’ like a jerk
Gotta get off my butt and do a full day’s work
I ran into a pothole, got into a car crash
Should’a been thinking and tried to fake whiplash
A crowd gathered round, they’re callin’ me fat
Who you lookin at with a face like that?

New York New York big city of dreams
Everything in New York ain’t always what it seems
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law and I know my way around

On 42nd Street, lookin for some action
Women standing on the corner selling satisfaction
One young punk just leaning on the fence
Tryin’ to make a dollar out of fifteen cents
Really is a prankster, tried to be a gangster
Real big wheel when a gun is in his hands
Just did a stick-up, just got picked up
One dead punk, killed by the man

New York New York big city of dreams
And everything in New York ain’t always what it seem
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law and I know my way around

Too much, too many people, too much (haha ha ha)
Too much, too many people, too much! Huh!

A baby cries and a mother dies
And the tears fall from the doctor’s eyes
Because in this room, on this day
The Good Lord has giveth, and taketh away, huh!
The gift of life really means a lot
And in the ghetto your life is all you got
So you take to the streets, trying to exist
In the trash and slime of a world like this
What you watch on TV tells you what life is supposed to be
But when you look outside the only thing you see
Is the poverty stricken reality, Heh!
Abandoned places, angry faces
Much hate and hunger throughout the races
You say, “I’m grown and I’m on my own
So why don’t everybody just leave me alone!”
Now you stay at home, talking on the phone
Doin ninety miles an hour in the fifty mile zone
They never took the time to tell you ‘bout sex
So you had to learn about it in the discotheques
Nine months later, the baby is there
And the Nigga that did it said, “I don’t care!”
You don’t have enough money to help feed two
So you have to choose between the baby and you
The sky was crying, rain and hail
When you put your baby in the garbage pail
Then you kissed the kid and put down the lid
And you tried to forget what you just did, Huh!
The muffled screams of a dying baby
Was enough to drive the young mother crazy
So she ran in the rain trying to ease the pain
Huh huh, And she drove herself insane

New York New York big city of dreams
But everything in New York ain’t always what it seem
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law and I know my way around

Too much, too many people, too much (haha ha ha)
Too much, too many people, too much! HUH!

New York New York big city of dreams
But everything in New York ain’t always what it seem
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law and I know my way around

Too much, too many people, too much (haha ha ha)
Too much, too many people, too much
