RT: @NonsuchRecords: Krzysztof Penderecki, Jonny Greenwood Collaboration Out Now; “Carries a Powerful Impact,” Says @MusicOMH http://bit.ly/zESEPR

Mew’s retweeted this from Nonsuch Records who are responsible for the release of the recent album by Krzysztof Penderecki and Jonny Greenwood. Nonsuch have previously released Jonny’s other classical work including the soundtrack to There Will Be Blood and Norwegian Wood.

The link is to information about the record dated the 13th of March 2012. The day before Mews retweeted it.

The new album featuring works by Krzysztof Penderecki—”Poland’s godfather of the musical avant-garde” (Independent)—paired with those they inspired by Jonny Greenwood is out now on Nonesuch Records. On the album are Penderecki’s Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima and Polymorphia (for 48 strings) and Greenwood’s Popcorn Superhet Receiver and 48 Responses to Polymorphia, all performed by the AUKSO Chamber Orchestra, with Penderecki conducting his pieces and Marek Moś conducting Greenwood’s. “The results are ear-tingling,” says NPR. “What we hear on this album is a meeting of two artistic visionaries connected in a real dialogue.”

(Source: NonSuch )

Yesterday Jonny Greenwood posted to Dead Air Space that Penderecki is coming to London this week to play material from the album live.

Jonny writes:

Penderecki is coming to London this week, with the AUKSO Chamber Orchestra . They’re going to play the music on the recording we’ve just released together.

To hear him conduct Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima and Polymorphia with this wonderful Polish orchestra is a really magical experience, so if you’re in London on Thursday, perhaps you’d like to come along…..

He includes a photo of the orchestra rehearsing and picture of what appears to be his original notation for one of the pieces:

The New York Times is carrying a great feature piece about Jonny titled ‘Radiohead’s Runaway Guitarist’ which you can read here.

NCR was providing a free stream of the album however it’s no longer available, you can order it from Nonsuch for $13.00 for just the MP3 or $14.00 for FLAC or CD+MP3

Mews retweeted this from @followthemaroundtv which is the twitter account for a new website where some fans have managed to build a tour tracker for the 2012 tour combining tweets, live videos, setlists along with a world map pinpointing each date on the tour.

It seems they managed to get permission from the bands management for the project and Mew’s was good enough to provide a retweet to let fans know of the site.

The title is a play on Follow Me Around, a ‘abandoned’ song from the OK Computer era known best from a recording in Meeting People is Easy.

It’s very cool site, check it out at www.followthemaround.com

RT: @nigelgod: please god – let the weather get better for glastonbury @LeoJThompson

Mews retweeted this tweet from Nigel Godrich regarding hopes for better weather for the 2011 Glastonbury festival held on Wednesday the 22nd to Sunday the 26th of June 2011. Radiohead performed a “surprise” set at the festival performing on the Park Stage, their first live performance since the release of The King of Limbs and the first performance of The Daily Mail with the full band. During the show Thom admitted they they where only playing for free tickets to the festival.

Sadly Nigel’s prayers where not answered as The Guardian describes the weather during the set to be ‘pissing down’ in a review of the show.

The day before the Glastonbury was due to start Mews took to Facebook posting a video from Youtube along with a festive message on what would have been the 21st in the UK:

Don’t mess with the paranormal. These rocks built the druids, not the other way around. Enjoy your summer solstice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhkGATrm6zY

Stonehenge summer solstice 2011
Filmed at The Summer Solstice festival at English Heritage site Stonehenge. A man tries to climb the rocks and falls into the crowd.

Interestingly Mews must have found that video not that long after it was uploaded as the 2011 Summer Solstice festival falls on the 21st of June, the same day he posted it to Facebook.

The Guardian carried a report about the festival with a photo of another man climbing the rocks they give the following information about the event:

The summer solstice is meant to be a night and dawn of peace, love and amazement. But not all of those attending the celebrations at Stonehenge entered into the spirit of the event.

Druids, pagans and revellers watched as two men, one shirtless, staged a fist fight at the ancient monument in Wiltshire.

While the majority of the 18,000 people who attended the solstice celebrations were well-behaved, 20 arrests and almost 50 drug seizures were made.

Photographer David Hedges, who witnessed the fight, said: “They were sparring for a few minutes before they really started throwing punches.”

Spectators surrounded the pair and a couple tried to break it up before the police arrived.

The 20 arrests included 11 for drugs offences and five for public order offences. Superintendent Gavin Williams of Wiltshire police said most of the attendees “came to see the sunrise in the spirit of the event. Although it was disappointing that some individuals chose to bring drugs with them, they were dealt with robustly.”

Amazingly it seems nobody got in trouble for climbing the rocks though Karma( or the paranormal) it seemed managed to get one of them. But it’s certainly not like any other historical site of cultural significance is routinely climbed on by visitors against the wishes of locals.. oops!.

Five hours after posting the video Mew’s added a comment to the post after two fans started having a argument in the comements. He provided a link to the videoclip for ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends’ by War from the album by the same name, and added the following message:

You can listen to Why Can’t We Be Friends? Here

Wiki shares the following tidbits on the song:

Recorded in 1974 and released on United Artists Records in June 1975. The title song reached #8 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The original LP edition came with a poster. Two singles from the album were released: “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” backed with “In Mazatlan”, and “Low Rider” backed with “So”. Both A-sides were nominated for the Grammy Awards of 1976.

The song had been used in a wide range of films and television including Dazed and Confused, BASEketball, Lethal Weapon 4 and a 1996 episode of The Simpsons.

“New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems.”

Aug, 26, 2011:

RT: @DJ_AM: “New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems.”

Chieftan Mews re-tweeted this while Radiohead where in New York to record a taping of Saturday Night Live and The Colbert Report along with a two suprise gigs at the Roseland Ballroom on Wednesday the 28th and 29th on September.

The tweet was the final message from Adam Goldstein aka “DJ AM” and originally from the 26th of August 2009, exactly 2 years from when Mew’s retweeted it.

Wiki gives the following description of DJ AM:

American DJ, remixer, record producer and musician better known as DJ AM. Goldstein was a member of the rock band Crazy Town, co-owner of a management company called Deckstar and worked on albums for Papa Roach and Will Smith, among others. He was a frequent collaborator with Travis Barker of Blink-182 and appeared on several television series.

Goldstein was found dead at his New York City apartment at 5:22 p.m. EDT on Friday, August 28, 2009, from an apparent drug overdose after friends, unable to reach Goldstein for a few days, became concerned and called police.

You can read more about him on Wiki and no doubt countless other places on the web.

The Tweet itself is a line from New York New York by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five released in 1983. You can watch a video of it here.
The rest of the lyrics are:

New York New York, big city of dreams
And everything in New York ain’t always what it seems
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law and I know my way around

Too much, too many people, too much (aha-ha)
Too much, too many people, too much, Raaah!

A castle in the sky, one mile high
Built to shelter the rich and greedy
Rows of eyes, disguised as windows
Looking down on the poor and the needy
Miles of people, marching up the avenue
Doin’ what they gotta do, just to get by
I’m living in the land of plenty and many
But I’m damn sure poor and I don’t know why

Too much, too many people, too much
Too much, too many people, too much!

A man’s on a ledge, says he’s gonna jump
People gather round, said, “He won’t he’s just a chump”
’Cause he lost his job, then he got robbed
His mortgage is due and his marriage is through
He says he ain’t gonna pay no child support
Because the bitch left him without a second thought
He got nothing to eat, no shoes on his feet
She even left his clothes out in the street
He keeps hearing noises when he’s at home
He always hears voices when he’s all alone
His wife took the kids, the car and the crib
In this man’s world, so much for Women’s Lib

New York New York big city of dreams
But everything in New York ain’t always what it seems
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law, and I know my way around

Down in the Village, you might think I’m silly
But you can’t tell the women from the men sometimes
They’re sugar and spice and everything nice
But when you get ‘em home ain’t no telling what you find
Right next door is a little old man
I seen him eating dog food out of a can
He says, “I got to eat, when I can’t afford meat
I barely can stand, on my own two feet
I got a bad habit and I just can’t break it
Something’s on my mind and I just can’t shake it
I need some time, and I want some space
I gotta get away from the human race”

Too much, too many people, too much (aha-ha)
Too much, too many people, too much! Raaah!

Staring at a skyscraper reaching into heaven
When over in the ghetto I’m livin in hell
Just play ball or be an entertainer
’Cause niggaz like me can’t read too well
Nobody loves me, nobody cares
I dreamed about a life but I’m livin in a nightmare
Paranoid schizo, set back, snowbound
Bad news psycho, heart attack, breakdown!

Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh
Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh
Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh
Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, Huh, Hee, HUH!

If only I could sleep just ten more minutes
I might find the strength to make another day
If I didn’t have to get up and do my thing
I would probably sleep my whole life away
I messed up a nice dream, somethin’ bout ice cream
Whipped cream, fruits and a cherry on top
Now I gotta get up and face the world, huh
The pressure is on, It ain’t never gonna stop
I sho’ gotta learn to use my mind
I don’t wanna be kissing nobody’s behind
Just standin’ on line lookin’ like a jerk
Gotta get off my butt and do a full day’s work
I ran into a pothole, got into a car crash
Should’a been thinking and tried to fake whiplash
A crowd gathered round, they’re callin’ me fat
Who you lookin at with a face like that?

New York New York big city of dreams
Everything in New York ain’t always what it seems
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law and I know my way around

On 42nd Street, lookin for some action
Women standing on the corner selling satisfaction
One young punk just leaning on the fence
Tryin’ to make a dollar out of fifteen cents
Really is a prankster, tried to be a gangster
Real big wheel when a gun is in his hands
Just did a stick-up, just got picked up
One dead punk, killed by the man

New York New York big city of dreams
And everything in New York ain’t always what it seem
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law and I know my way around

Too much, too many people, too much (haha ha ha)
Too much, too many people, too much! Huh!

A baby cries and a mother dies
And the tears fall from the doctor’s eyes
Because in this room, on this day
The Good Lord has giveth, and taketh away, huh!
The gift of life really means a lot
And in the ghetto your life is all you got
So you take to the streets, trying to exist
In the trash and slime of a world like this
What you watch on TV tells you what life is supposed to be
But when you look outside the only thing you see
Is the poverty stricken reality, Heh!
Abandoned places, angry faces
Much hate and hunger throughout the races
You say, “I’m grown and I’m on my own
So why don’t everybody just leave me alone!”
Now you stay at home, talking on the phone
Doin ninety miles an hour in the fifty mile zone
They never took the time to tell you ‘bout sex
So you had to learn about it in the discotheques
Nine months later, the baby is there
And the Nigga that did it said, “I don’t care!”
You don’t have enough money to help feed two
So you have to choose between the baby and you
The sky was crying, rain and hail
When you put your baby in the garbage pail
Then you kissed the kid and put down the lid
And you tried to forget what you just did, Huh!
The muffled screams of a dying baby
Was enough to drive the young mother crazy
So she ran in the rain trying to ease the pain
Huh huh, And she drove herself insane

New York New York big city of dreams
But everything in New York ain’t always what it seem
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law and I know my way around

Too much, too many people, too much (haha ha ha)
Too much, too many people, too much! HUH!

New York New York big city of dreams
But everything in New York ain’t always what it seem
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law and I know my way around

Too much, too many people, too much (haha ha ha)
Too much, too many people, too much

Mew’s first re-tweeted then replied to Inkybrown who managed to ask Colin and Phil about Mews after one of the Roseland Ballroom Shows in New York.

Since July 6th Mew’s has stated that he was stuck in the Ziggurat ( www.the-ziggurat.com ) with footage of Supercollider missing from The King of Limbs – Live at the Basement.

It seems Mew’s got his revenge as only Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to perform Give Up The Ghost, the episode was screened on Monday October 3rd in the US.

Stanley talks about this on his blog on the 22nd of November 2011…

In other news, Household Worms has come back from the printers, as you can see above. I’m very fucking pleased with it, and am enjoying this sense of acheivement whilst it lasts. Before it fades into the inevitable ennui. So yes, my new book! It will be available from the shop on this site, which you can get to by simply clicking that word right above here that says ‘SHOP’. And also from actual bookshops. Even, possibly, Amazon too. Happy happy, joy joy etc.

..and gives the following details of what the book contains in his shop:

Forty-one stories of varying lengths and levels of cheerfulness from the failing brain of Stanley Donwood. Ideal as a Zmas stocking filler for the slightly deranged. The same size as old fashioned Penguin books, this sumptuous paperback has 144 pages and an embossed cover featuring a detail from one of Mr Donwood’s linocuts, as well as a frontispiece and an endispiece (?) by Zachariah Twain.

Zachariah Twain is a alias Thom Yorke used for The King of Limbs replacing the earlier as Dr. Tchock.

If you have a Spare £10.00 (plus postage) you can buy it Here.
