@ChieftanMews Running amok near undisclosed location – gut scratching, waiting for bodysnatchin – cos’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2UhvN0k74w

After months of non-activity on Twitter Chieftan Mews returned for a brief tweet that was deleted within the hour but not before being retweeted by @MeToSpeak (thanks heaps!).
The Youtube link is to a video of R.E.M performing ‘It’s The End of The World As We Know It’

He also updated his Twitter cover to show a previously unpublished Stanley Donwood tree sketch

While at first glance to be just about Atoms for Peace the tweet is a satire of a recent hoax regarding Jonny Greenwood and the band heading to Brazil to await the end of the world.

On December 14th Jonny Greenwood posted the following to Dead Air Space:

In Sydney with the ACO

Just a few weeks left of the residency with the australian chamber orchestra – who are amazing. Hope the resulting music is worth all the trust they’ve put in me. Thanks, gut-scratchers….

The link takes you to a feature by NASA titled ‘Beyond 2012: Why the World Won’t End’ which was the summery of a Google+ Hangout with NASA on the 28th of November focused on disproving 2012 doomsday predictions.

The post is a response to a story run by The Daily Mail (The Newspaper..not the song) on the 13th reporting that Radiohead’s management had been forced to deny claims that Jonny Greenwood was in Brazil to await the end of the world.

Radiohead guitarist forced to deny hiding out at Brazilian hotel ‘waiting for Mayan prediction that the world will end’

Representatives of Radiohead today denied local media reports that the band’s guitarist Jonny Greenwood is hiding out in a rural Brazilian hotel to ‘wait for the end of the world’.

The hoax originated with local São Paulo newspaper Folha who co-incidentally happened to put the story up at 12/12/2012 – 12h12 either as a joke or a publicity stunt.

Chieftan describes himself as ‘Running amok near undisclosed location’

AMOK is the title of the upcoming Atoms for Peace album to be released on the 25th of February 2013.

The cover and videoclip for the debut single Default features the Lost Angeles artwork by Stanley Donwood.

Wiki provides the following meaning of the phrase ‘ Running Amok’

Running amok, sometimes referred to as simply amok[1] (also spelled amuk, from the Malay meaning “mad with uncontrollable rage”) is a term for a killing spree perpetrated by an individual out of rage or resentment over perceived mistreatment. The syndrome of “Amok” is found in the DSM-IV TR.[2] The phrase is often used in a less serious manner in relation to someone or something that is out of control and causing trouble (e.g., a dog tearing up the living room furniture might be said to be running amok)

Bodysnatchin is a reference to Bodysnatchers, a song from In Rainbows.

With the Radiohead tour over for the year there is hope for a Atoms for Peace and/or Ultraista tour next year.. assuming Cheiftan Mews is wrong about it being the end of the world of course!

Hypnobear

Chieftan Mews has updated his Twitter background today from TinyFarAway.jpg to Hypnobear.jpg and his website from http://thekingoflimbs.com to http://www.radiohead.tv

The image is taken directly from from Stanley Donwood’s website and consists of the Radiohead ‘Modified Bear’ logo combined with a photo of Lost Angeles which is on exhibition as of Tomorrow (April 28th, 2012) at Subliminal Projects in L.A

Lost Angeles
Stanley Donwood
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 28th • 8PM – 10 PM

There is no future. We have evicted ourselves from our own cities, rendered our agriculture poisonous, criminalized the poor, aggrandized the rich, honored the stupid and ridiculed the intelligent…I have no solutions, no wisdom to offer…Whilst Rome burns, I take up my little chisel and I carve a panoramic apocalypse of my own…and if you want to see it, you’re more than welcome. – Stanley Donwood, 2012

SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is pleased to announce Lost Angeles, a solo exhibition of art by British artist Stanley Donwood.

Lost Angeles will feature a new body of work where Donwood turns his poignant perception on the impact of current societal trends and behavior towards Los Angeles. His visual meditation on society envelopes viewers in a beautifully, graphic landscape of impending doom. The fluid black and white scene resonates with honesty and forewarning. True to form, Donwood once again succeeds in giving flawless design to his version of our tragically flawed future.

On display will be an 18-foot apocalyptic panorama of the City of Angels being destroyed by fire, flood and meteor storm. Originally carved into 18 separate panels of linoleum then hand burnished onto Japanese Kozo paper, the never-before-seen, limited edition print was inspired by subject matter similar to Donwood’s 2006 work titled London Views.

Nigel also provided a photo of the exhibition though his twitter account yesterday:

@nigelgod: Exhibition of new Stanley Donwood’s work “Lost Angeles” at our friend Shepard Fairey’s gallery in echo park! Yee har!

Followed up with news that there would be a Atoms for Peace DJ Set at Transmission LA tonight as of 6-10pm. It’s known that both Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich will be DJing for this event.

If your lucky enough to find yourself in L.A tonight you can reserve a ticket here before they’re all gone.

or you can check out some cool new interviews and reviews of Stanley’s exhibition here and here amongst other places on the web.

Chieftan Mew’s had previously tweeted about Lost Angeles on August 15th, 2011 while Stanley was in the process of working on the print, you can read more about it and Lost Angeles here.

Chieftan Mew’s negates himself here, by tagging both Stanley Donwood and Nigel Godrich (@nigelgod) in his message he assures that both can see and will be notified of his message.

Instead it’s more likely that he’s informing fans of Nigel’s new twitter account as his disused former account of @nigelgodrich has no tweets.

These are the first of a series of ongoing tweets where Chieftan Mews states that he was stuck in the Ziggurat with footage taken from The King of Limbs – Live From the Basement.

He accuses Nigel Godrich of removing him from the film and reviles that there is a performance of Supercollider missing from the version shown on television and online. This later proves to be correct when on November 9 Radiohead released The King of Limbs – Live From the Basement on Bluray/DVD with Supercollider as a bonus feature.

http://www.the-ziggurat.com is the web address for The Byzantine Ziggurat a abandoned part of the Radiohead website.
The Memory Hole on Radiohead’s Website describes it as thus:

This was the Strategic Defence Initiative. A ponderous structure stuck in hyperspace which we are not sure what to do with at the moment. But one day, it’s time will come, of that there is no doubt.

Since 2008 it simply contains a looped flash video of coloured blocks that was used as the background for InRainbows.com which hosted the ‘pay what you want’ store for In Rainbows. As of May 2011 the site is no longer available but you can view it here via the Web Archive.

On August 1st Servo uploaded a copy of the video from The Ziggurat to youtube and posted it to Chieftan Mew’s wall on Facebook.

Screenshot of Mew's Reply to a question on Facebook, August 1st, 2011.

Chieftan Mews replied on the 3rd of August with the following message:

My face emerges at the 30 second mark at the lower/central portion of the screen and then disappears a short time later. Please call a plumber or a lumberjack immediately.

( The Lumberjack is probably a reference to a classic Monty Python Sketch entitled The Lumberjack Song which continues the ‘Woods/Trees’ theme. For any poor souls who have never heard it you can watch it on youtube Here. )

Mews replied again to another fan with more details on the 5th of August:

Looking to the bottom-left part of the screen you can see the shape of a head (The dark blue is hair and green for the face)

Starting from the 5th of August 2011 Mews sent a series of weekly tweets counting down from #10/10 to #1/10

On the 7th of October Mews tweeted that “Like you, once again, I am a free fugitive of life.” and followed by the statement that he had been “set free by Supercollider.”

Recently in January 2012 a link to the Ziggurat was added to Dead Air Space’s list of Links with the following note:

found this while looking for something else.. it is now my screen saver

Servo claims that the film loop on The Ziggurat has been changed and is different to the version he posted to Youtube and Facebook last year as it no longer contains the face at the 36 second mark. You can read his theory on this here at Ims Menoo.

The Byzantine Ziggurat itself has a long and interesting history.

A Ziggurat is a massive structures built in the ancient Mesopotamian valley and western Iranian plateau, having the form of a terraced step pyramid of successively receding stories or levels. Wiki also gives the following:

Notable ziggurats include the Great Ziggurat of Ur near Nasiriyah, Iraq; the Ziggurat of Aqar Quf near Baghdad, Iraq; Chogha Zanbil in Khūzestān, Iran; and Sialk near Kashan, Iran.

According to Herodotus, at the top of each ziggurat was a shrine, although none of these shrines has survived. One practical function of the ziggurats was a high place on which the priests could escape rising water that annually inundated lowlands and occasionally flooded for hundreds of miles, as for example the 1967 flood. Another practical function of the ziggurat was for security. Since the shrine was accessible only by way of three stairways, a small number of guards could prevent non-priests from spying on the rituals at the shrine on top of the ziggurat, such as cooking of sacrificial food and burning of carcasses of sacrificial animals. Each ziggurat was part of a temple complex that included a courtyard, storage rooms, bathrooms, and living quarters, around which a city was built

You can read more about them here.

Byzantine is the name of The Byzantine Empire.

Wiki explains it as the following:

The Byzantine Empire (or Byzantium) was the Eastern Roman Empire during the periods of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, centered on the capital of Constantinople. Known simply as the “Roman Empire” (Greek: Βασιλεία Ῥωμαίων, Basileia Rhōmaiōn)[2] or Romania (Ῥωμανία) to its inhabitants and neighbours, it was the direct continuation of the Ancient Roman State and maintained Roman state traditions.[3] Byzantium is today distinguished from ancient Rome proper insofar as it was oriented towards Greek culture, characterised by Christianity rather than Roman paganism and was predominantly Greek-speaking rather than Latin-speaking.

“The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Volume II” Appears on Page 2 of the Amnesiac Book.

During the Hail To the Thief era The Byzantine Ziggurat looked like this:

The Byzantine Ziggurat cia. 2005 via the Web Archive

Logging in you where provided with a chatroom as part of digital-landfill.co.uk which today also shows the In Rainbows video loop.

Before 2005 The Byzantine Ziggurat was home to the Waste Game which was online treasure hunt of sorts for Amnesiac containing 3 chapters of which only the first two where ever run. A record of the game can be found at Waste-Game-News.com Mike gives the following introduction:

What is the “Waste Game” or the “Byzantine Ziggurat?” It all started like this. At the time, Radiohead had put up a new website, and this was a page called the Byzantine Ziggurat. People were freaking out about how to figure out the password.

And by freaking out, I mean some were going totally out of their minds. I was one of them. I started keeping a copy of everything to do with the game, as did others, some of which helped me collect stuff, and this website was born. While the game was still going, this site helped others keep track of the latest news.

the waste game (Byzantine Ziggurat) was designed and executed by Radiohead,
Stanley Donwood, and many other associates.

..Sounds rather familiar doesn’t it?

Surprisingly it seems the game had two winners! Waste Game News describes the Chapter 2 Prize Kit as including “a Certificate of Byzantine Zigguration signed by the band, two posters, a backstage pass from the 2001 Oxford show, Zigguration Tests taken by each member of the band, and a video of the 2001 Dublin show.”

The Zigguration Tests where a written exam written by Stanley Donwood and apparently administered by Mel from W.A.S.T.E. All five band members sat them but only Ed’s exam paper has been made public. You can check it out Here along with photos of the rest of the prizes.

As of May 2005 Radiohead no longer maintains the waste-game.com domain name, it appears that Chapter 3 titled ‘Playing Zeus’ morphed into what was to become The Scrapbook on the Radiohead website as Mike states that in a conversation with maxk from W.A.S.T.E on April 5 2003 that Chapter 3 was to have 2,700 rooms(pages). There’s quite a few old websites from fans who where working to solve the game so best bet is to do a web search for ‘The Byzantine Ziggurat’.

Greek Mythology has been a reoccurring theme for Stanley Donwood’s artwork since 2000 and Mew’s has used Greek in a tweet (My bucks, must I go out on a limb here and say more is revealing at Ελληνική οδός? That man: ims menooo! Juicy pre-watching. Beware you not!) relating to Stanley.

However in this case Mew’s seems to be tweeting more about the status of Ziggurat being ‘abandoned’ asking Stanley Donwood in a later tweet if he would toss a difficult artwork to the Zig. ( @StanleyDonwood I see you have finally cut “Lost Angeles”. Are you going to toss that into the Ziggurat too? ). On the 22nd of September he responded to a question on Facebook asking where he was:

Mew's reply to a question on Facebook, 22nd of September.

Question from Fan: where ya at mewsy?
Answer from Mews: In your garbage can

Therefore we can assume that Mew’s sees the Zig as something of a trash for abandoned projects.

@StanleyDonwood I see you have finally cut “Lost Angeles”. Are you going to toss that into the Ziggurat too? I feel guilt when I go jogging.

Aug 15, 2011:

@ChieftanMews: @StanleyDonwood I see you have finally cut “Lost Angeles”. Are you going to toss that into the Ziggurat too? I feel guilt when I go jogging.

Lost Angeles is a eighteen feet linocut Stanley Donwood has been working on over much of the year. The project has proved to be difficult as Stanley describes on his website:

Nothing is easy and everything is complicated. As you can see from the picture below, printing this full-length hand-burnished edition of Lost Angeles involves grovelling around on the floor for hours

Below I present an almost verbatim account of the first day’s printing, as told by a long-suffering printer.

It started off ok, very slow… There is the issue of how you keep the print going in a dead straight line, and trying to keep the edge of the paper to the exact line of the registration mark. Quite difficult, as it only needs to move a couple of millimetres and then that would mean you have several centimetres at the end, up or down. A few degrees out and you’re fucked. Halfway I could see it trying to wander more off the line and at that point tried to gradually ‘bend it’ back in.
I should have established base camp there and then and gone home, but I carried on regardless pressing on for a quick ascent of the summit, thinking that this one could be my printers proof. By the time I’d got to the eighteenth hole I was totally knackered and I probably lost one second of concentration and then in that moment the bugger had me! I had allowed extra paper either end for any misdemeanors, and the paper jumped on the last block, so there was a double print!
I tidied up, locked the studio, then walked off to find the car. Then realised in my delirium I had locked the keys in the studio. So then had to find a ladder to scale twelve feet of wall, and once I got over the top realised I couldn’t get down the other side because I had a large fucking print resting precariously on boards just below. I had to find a second ladder and then drag that up and then walk across the dividing wall like a tightrope walker before lowering the ladder down the wall to the floor. I drove home and nearly crashed the damned car.

(Source: Lost Angeles )

As you can see for the image Lost Angeles is similar in style to the previous Eraser and Atoms For Peace artwork.

It seems that far from giving up and ‘tossing it in the Ziggurat’ Stanley has completed the work and will be exhibiting it:

Lost Angeles will be exhibited for the first time at Subliminal Projects Gallery, 1331 West Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90026, USA. The show will run from 28th April 2012.

Could it be that Mew’s is guilty to have spare time when Stanley is hard at work?

@ChieftanMews: @gillespeterson : Please help me find Twain & Wildwood. They don’t have facebook or twitter accounts so I am unaware of what they are eating

Gilles Peterson is the host of Gilles Peterson Wordwide on BBC Radio 1, at the time of the tweet he was scheduled to do show with Thom Yorke on the 29th of November. He did not respond to Mew’s message.

You can listen to the show on BBC iPlayer Here or just check out the playlist which featured a previously unreleased Jamie xx remix of Bloom that didn’t make the cut for TKOL-1234567.

Mew’s tends to refer to any kind of material in terms of food and in the past has urged fans at the beginning of a episode of The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time to ‘Eat’ what was to come (So sit back, relax, and eat. Eat. Eat.).

In this case he’s searching for Stanley Donwood (Twain) and Thom Yorke (Wildwood) who both have twitter accounts at @Stanleydonwood and @ThomYorke respectively. He ends up resorting to Facebook in his search where he registered on the 4th of March 2011.

25 years. Jericho. Friday. Woods. Saturday. Living. Project. Phil’s harmonica. Ago. Carrots&sticks. Bluebook. Mobile Devices & Birds Chirp.

Sep 8, 2011:

@ChieftanMews: 25 years. Jericho. Friday. Woods. Saturday. Living. Project. Phil’s harmonica. Ago. Carrots&sticks. Bluebook. Mobile Devices & Birds Chirp.

Unscrambled you could read it as ’25 Years. Ago. (this?) Saturday. (On a) Friday. Jericho (Tavern with) Phil’s harmonica.’ in rather a Cluedo who/where/how style.

2011 marks the 25th anniversary of On a Friday’s first gig at the Jericho Tavern a pub and music venue in Oxford. Jonny Greenwood originally joined the band on harmonica before playing keyboard and ending up as the lead guitarist.

On a Friday is of course the name Radiohead used until 1991 when they signed to EMI.

September 8, 1986 is not a Saturday it’s a Monday, nor is September 8, 2011. This suggests that Radiohead’s first gig must have been on Wednesday September 10th, 1986 however finding any source to confirm has been difficult as most sites only say the band performed in the 2nd half of that year (well except some that insist it was 1987 pft).

The rest of the tweet is more modern.

Carrots&sticks. is of course a idiom for the idea of combining a reward and punishment in order for a certain behaviour.

It appears on a Kid-A era tour poster titled ‘Fear Stalks the Land’ along with the line ‘Mobiles Chirping’ from Idioteque, Abbatoir noises and ‘Our Name is Legion’ a which Mew’s has also tweeted.

(Source: Rockfeedback.com)

it also appears in artwork from the additional hidden art booklet as “CHECKS AND BALANCES CARROTS AND STICKS” in 1st edition Kid-A cds reprinted on a T-shirt as SEX WORK DEATH in 2000 and in Dead Children Playing a picture book by Stanley Donwood & Dr. Tchock (Thom Yorke) featuring artwork from OK Computer though to Hail To the Thief.

(Source: Dead Children Playing)

Bluebook is of course a nod towards Facebook’s logo.

Birds Chirps is another way of saying Birds Tweet ala Twitter.

and Mobile Devices.. all three ways to keep in touch.

Woods relates to Bad Woods and Twisted Woods which are both sets of prints by Stanley Donwood, the first forms part of the artwork for The King of Limbs with the second being the artwork for These Are My Twisted Words.

Bot’s are a name for software that runs a automated set of tasks usually at high speed. Such tasks may be to analyse websites such as the ‘web crawlers’ utilized by search engines like Google, for fraud/crime or to perform some level of basic AI such as ‘Chatbots’ which aim to mimic the experience of talking to a real person.

Later he responds to another fan with “When I cry, lightning strikes. Reality has now become a fantasy. I have proof. Meanwhile. Wham chose life. Farewell and be alert or not.”

The line ‘When I cry, Lighting strikes’ may be a nod towards Lightning Crashes by Live from Throwing Copper, it was released in the UK in 1996.

‘Wham chose life’ refers to the ‘CHOOSE LIFE’ t-shirts worn by WHAM when performing ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go Go’ on BBC’s Top of the Pops in 1984.

Finally each of the Facebook messages is signed off with ‘be alert or not.’ suggesting that Mew’s may, or may not be active again soon.

Mew’s Retweeted this from TangentBooks.

Household Worms is the title of the book in question.

(Source: No News is Good News)
Stanley talks about this on his blog on the 22nd of November 2011…

In other news, Household Worms has come back from the printers, as you can see above. I’m very fucking pleased with it, and am enjoying this sense of acheivement whilst it lasts. Before it fades into the inevitable ennui. So yes, my new book! It will be available from the shop on this site, which you can get to by simply clicking that word right above here that says ‘SHOP’. And also from actual bookshops. Even, possibly, Amazon too. Happy happy, joy joy etc.

..and gives the following details of what the book contains in his shop:

Forty-one stories of varying lengths and levels of cheerfulness from the failing brain of Stanley Donwood. Ideal as a Zmas stocking filler for the slightly deranged. The same size as old fashioned Penguin books, this sumptuous paperback has 144 pages and an embossed cover featuring a detail from one of Mr Donwood’s linocuts, as well as a frontispiece and an endispiece (?) by Zachariah Twain.

Zachariah Twain is a alias Thom Yorke used for The King of Limbs replacing the earlier as Dr. Tchock.

@ChieftanMews: 辰 There be Dragons this coming New Year. 地支. http://www.weibo.com/radiohead 龍 prepare 2 say yer name しん ZzZzZz たつ @StanleyDonwood Stay detuned. ␄

First up of course is that 2012 is the Chinese year of the dragon.

The weibo link is to the offical Radiohead account on Chinese social networking site Weibo where Stanley Donwood has added a number of untitled drawings over the past couple of months.

辰 of course is Dragon in Chinese and Japanese.

辰 地支 seems to mean ‘Supporting Area/Location/Ground’ in the sense that the weibo is for fans in that area.

‘prepare 2 say yer name’ suggests signing up to the Weibo page to keep up to date.

しん ZzZzZz たつ is ‘leaving/over ZzZzZz dead’

So putting it all back together the message is for fans in Japan, China and Asia that Radiohead have a weibo page where they can sign up and get some artwork from Stanley Donwood.

On the 8 Jan 2012 Radiohead added a tourdate for Taipei, Taiwan. It will be the first time that they have ever performed in the Republic of China.

Far Away is Close at Hand in Images of Elsewhere

Mew’s current Twitter background is titled tinyfaraway.jpg and is taken straight from Stanley Donwood’s Blog.

it is a scaled down version of a recent print by Stanley titled ‘Far Away is Close at Hand in Images of Elsewhere’ and is one a set of three ‘Alchemical Terror prints’ from a art installation entitled ‘Mithras Tauroctonos Subterranea’ which was part of THE MINOTAUR.

(Source: theoutsiders.net)

The other two prints in the series are We who are still alive, are unreal in the eyes of the dead and There had been no quiet. There will be no peace which was later adapted to be packaging for The King of Limbs – From the Basement Bluray/DVD and similar to a tweet by Mews on April 1st 2011 (I am far from home. I am far from calm.)

(Source No News is Good News)
Stanley explains them as:

The posters (about 900 of them) represent the propaganda of three splinter factions of the same esoteric alchemical terrorist group, and utilise the angelic language vouchsafed to Dr John Dee and Edward Kelley in the sixteenth century.

The ‘angelic language’ on the poster is called Enochian.

The phrase “Far away is close at hand in images of elsewhere” was a piece of graffiti painted along the railway tracks to Paddington Station in the 1970s. There’s a nice blog post about it here

You can find out more by reading Stanley’s Stupid Blog (scroll down to November 2011), and Tablibro 28
