@ChieftanMews: #8 of 10: http://t.co/IAEHtG1 Have you really considered that you have been lied to constantly since you were born? (Expires Aug 25 or so)

The 3rd of a series of 10 weekly questions asked by Chieftan Mews.

In this case it came with a link to The King of Limbs – Live from The Basement on the Offical Radiohead Youtube Channel which the band have been using since 2005 to host their videoclips and some webcast material for In Rainbows and The King of Limbs. They also uploaded all of the remixes from TKOL-RMX 1234567 and The Daily Mail/Staircase along with The King of Limbs on the day the album was released in stores.

Radiohead reported on Dead Air Space that there had been a issue getting The King of Limbs – From The Basement shown in the UK, apologizing for the delay on July 20th as “the original broadcaster decided not to show it”.

On June 5th 2011 BBC Worldwide Music Television announced that they had signed a deal to be the international distributor for The King of Limbs – Live From the Basement.

Their press release gave the following details:

BBC Worldwide Music Television has signed a deal with Radiohead to distribute internationally a new and exclusive live performance of Radiohead’s eighth album, ‘The King of Limbs’.

Radiohead – The King of Limbs: Live From The Basement is a 55-minute performance from one of the most successful and critically acclaimed acts of their generation, who have sold over 30 million albums worldwide. The programme will feature the notoriously elusive band performing the entirety of their celebrated new album in a studio setting with some additional behind the scenes material. It is scheduled to be the first time that the grammy-award winners are captured on camera this year.

The King of Limbs album was released digitally in February 2011 and physically at the end of March 2011, yet this exclusive performance will be the first time the band will have played this collection of songs in public. The band will be performing for acclaimed music show ‘From the Basement’, the brain child of production genius Nigel Godrich, who has either engineered or produced all of Radiohead’s albums since The Bends and has worked with a variety of international acts including Paul McCartney, U2, R.E.M and Air.

Having launched the title at MIPTV, BBC Worldwide has already received pre-sale offers for a number of major territories and expects to have a substantial network of broadcasters in place for its premiere.

Salim Mukaddam, VP Music Television at BBC Worldwide said, “It is a real honour to be working with Radiohead on this project. Radiohead are a band that rarely performs for television, but when they do, it’s a moment to savour. There is already huge anticipation for this performance and we’re delighted that they’ve decided to work with us at BBC Worldwide, confirming our position as market leaders in Music Television. As a fan I cannot wait to see these beautiful songs brought to life in this programme.”

Bryce Edge of Courtyard Management, Radiohead’s management company said, “This will be Radiohead’s first collaboration with BBC Worldwide and the band are excited at the prospect of having their first live performance of ‘The King of Limbs’ broadcast around the world . The band will be filmed and recorded by the From The Basement team, which includes Nigel Godrich their long time producer, Dilly Gent ,who commissioned many of the memorable Radiohead videos and Grant Gee who filmed the Radiohead documentary ‘Meeting People is Easy’”

Radiohead – The King of Limbs: Live from the Basement becomes available to international broadcasters in June and is embargoed for broadcast until 1st July 2011. The programme is filmed in HD, will have no audience and no presenter – just a rare opportunity to see an intimate performance from one of the greatest bands in the world.

( Source: BBC.co.uk )

On the 20th of July BBC Worldwide America announced that rights had been sold to broadcast the performance on the MTV Network in America.

The BBC Worldwide Blog carried a piece the next day written by Salim Mukaddam the Vice President of BBC Worldwide Music Television about the project:

Last year I had the opportunity to bring together my personal passion and professional life when I met with Radiohead’s management, Bryce Edge and Chris Hufford. You could not wish to meet two more welcoming, co-operative, professional and knowledgeable people. Both Chris and Bryce instantly saw the potential that a partnership with BBC Worldwide could deliver. However, any project was obviously going to be dependent on the band – thankfully the band was interested and had a project in mind.

Radiohead launched their new album ‘The King of Limbs’ in February and from that point everything seemed to happen at light speed. The band wanted to work with their long time producer Nigel Godrich. He is one of the team responsible for ‘From The Basement’ – an incredible music show that sets the benchmark for quality in music television. The band’s concept was to perform the whole of their new album for our TV project…

…The result is a beautiful fifty five minute journey into the world of Radiohead. The King of Limbs is a stunning album in itself, but seeing the band bring these songs to life is a joy to behold. The full programme is coming to a TV screen near you soon, with confirmed broadcasts on Palladia in the USA, Canal + in Spain, Fuji TV in Japan, MultiShow in Brazil and SuperChannel in Canada.

To date Radiohead – Live from the Basement never made it to television in the UK despite broadcasts occurring in other countries such as Spain, America, Canada, Japan, Brazil and Australia. The BBC Claims that this was due to them being ‘unable to find a broadcast partner’ for the UK even with the BBC having their own broadcasting network in that region.

The ‘lie’ statement from Mews refers to the fact that the copy of The King of Limbs – Live From The Basement uploaded to Youtube was described as ‘in full’ in the Youtube Comments, Chieftan Mews had previously claimed on July 12th that the version broadcast was missing footage of Supercollider ( @nigelgod that buck, took me out of the final cut so I took Supercollider & some juicy footage before being banished to the Zigg. Stuck.Help ).

On February 3rd 2012 AustinLBrock uploaded the full recording of The King of Limbs – Live From The Basement to Youtube with the permission of the band’s management and BBC Worldwide. Unlike the original version uploaded by the band this included the footage of Supercollider from the Bluray and DVD that the band released on the 9th of November 2011.

Mew’s later retweeted a link to the video from AustinLBrock ( RT: @AustinLBrock: [1080p] Radiohead – The King Of Limbs From The Basement [Full Show + Supercollider] #Radiohead #ThomYorke http://t.co/tD0arRGD ).

Aug 24, 2011:

@ChieftanMews: #6/10: Which artist of today reminds you of the John Heartfield of yestercentury? (#7 expires Sept 1, #6 expires Sept 8) #rigid #tkol

The sixth of a series of weekly questions Mew’s provides two hashtags with his question along with the information that he will be taking replies until the 8th of September… though what he had planned to do with them is still unknown. #7 refers to a 2nd question ( @ChieftanMews: #7/10: No more hiding: “The atom had a positive, a negative & a neutral” & “Later for the date than the hadron collider” & “I am open.” ?? )

#rigid short for “I’m rigid with excitement” which was a quote from Episode 2 of The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time.

#tkol which is a abbreviation of The King of Limbs.

In this case he asks fans to provide suggestions of contemporary artists who remind them of John Heartfield a German artist who was best known for his political ‘photomontages’ during the 1930-1940s which satirized the Nazi Party. Chieftan Mew’s later tweeted one example of his work entitled ‘O joyful, o blessed, miracle-bringing time.’ featuring a choir of angels wearing gas masks.

Photomontage is a technique for making composite pictures that pre-dates the use of computer software such as Photoshop. Instead the photos where cut and glued by hand to create a new image which was then sometimes photographed in order to create a seamless print.

According to Thom Yorke The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time was named after a John Heartfield collage. You can read more about it in the post about the Christmas image here.

Many of the replies seemed to point towards Banksy the pseudonym for a English graffiti artist famous for his political work and dark humor as a possible contemporary for John Heartfield:

Get The Blessing is a Bristol based jazz rock quartet formed in 2000 by Jim Barr and Clive Deamer who last year joined Radiohead as a additional drummer to perform material from The King of Limbs live. OCDC is their third album. Their previous albums are ‘All is Yes’ and ‘Bugs in Amber’ which the band released under the shorter name of ‘The Blessing’.

( Photo from: All About Jazz.com )

Like Phillip Selway it seems Clive Deamer can hold his own as a singer with the band releasing a exclusive version of Bugs In Amber on Youtube titled Moot that features Clive Deamer’s lead vocals.

Clive also has been providing backing vocals on Cut A Hole, one of the new Radiohead songs debuted during the American leg of the 2012 Tour.

If you’re in the UK you can catch the band playing on the following dates, although it appears they’ve got a different drummer due to Clive Deamer being on tour with Radiohead:

22/Mar/2012 – Band on the Wall, Manchester, UK
23/Mar/2012 – NCEM, York, UK
24/Mar/2012 – Kazimier, Liverpool, UK
28/Mar/2012 – Hare and Hounds, Birmingham, UK
29/Mar/2012 – Boileroom, Guildford, UK
03/Apr/2012 – Ronnie Scott’s, London, UK
04/Apr/2012 – Ronnie Scott’s, London, UK

You can find OCDC along with their previous albums on iTunes or buy it direct from their website here for 11 Pounds or 12 Pounds for postage outside the UK.

@ChieftanMews: 1/10: Was/Is this all a w.a.s.t.e. of your/our time? Stay detuned.. .. .. .. .. .␄

This was the last of the #10 series of tweets from Chieftan Mews sent out each Thursday for 10 weeks. On the same day as this tweet Mew’s sent a second message stating that he was ‘free’ (Like you, once again, I am a free fugitive of life.) assuming that the quiz had lead to him escaping from the Ziggurat from where he’d been trapped over the previous months.

w.a.s.t.e stands for We Await Silent Tristenro’s Empire and is the name for Radiohead’s official online store and fanclub since 1992. According to Follow Me Around it is from a 1966 novel written by Thomas Pynchon titled The Crying Of Lot 49.

Wiki gives a brief description of the book as:

The shortest of Pynchon’s novels, it is about a woman, Oedipa Maas, possibly unearthing the centuries-old conflict between two mail distribution companies, Thurn und Taxis and the Trystero (or Tristero). The former actually existed, and was the first firm to distribute postal mail; the latter is Pynchon’s invention. The novel is often classified as a notable example of postmodern fiction.

Time included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005

The novel follows Oedipa Maas, a Californian housewife who becomes entangled in a convoluted historical mystery when her ex-lover dies and designates her the co-executor of his estate. The catalyst of Oedipa’s adventure is a set of stamps that may have been used by a secret underground postal delivery service, the Trystero (or Tristero).

According to the historical narrative that Oedipa pieces together during her travels around the San Francisco Bay Area, the Trystero was defeated by Thurn und Taxis – a real postal system – in the 18th century but went underground and continued to exist into Oedipa’s present day, the 1960s. Their mailboxes are disguised as regular waste-bins, often displaying their slogan W.A.S.T.E., an acronym for We Await Silent Tristero’s Empire, and their symbol, a muted post horn.

Amusingly according to a interview with Thom and Jonny in 1995 the band started their own church titled ‘The Holy Church of Waste’ while on tour in the US.

Jonny: (cutting Thom off) No, we’re reverends…..

Thom: (Cutting Jonny off) Oh yeah, we’re reverends…we’re all reverends.

Jonny: We started our own church.

Thom: The Holy Church of Waste.

Jonny: Well, we can legally marry people and bury people in 13 American states, including California.

Thom: So if anybody needs, you know, to get married, we can do it for them now. (to Jonny) How much did it cost us? Twenty dollars?

Jonny: Ten dollars or something. So we are going to conduct a mass community-style wedding at our LA show, that’s tomorrow.

You can read the rest of the interview on Follow Me Around here.

While we do not yet know if this was ‘just a waste of our time’ on November 9 Radiohead announced on Dead Air Space that they would be releasing a Bluray/DVD edition of The King of Limbs – From the Basement with Supercollider ‘added as a bonus track’.

We’d love to hear what answers other people sent to Mew’s ‘quiz’!

Two of 5 Tweets sent on February 23rd that where deleted within 24 hours. The first tweet is addressed to Phillip Selway and Clive Dreamer who is currently working with Radiohead as a additional drummer for The King of Limbs.

As reported on The King of Limbs Part 2 there is a hidden message in the selection of capital letters.

It is as follows:

B A K B A K

S I S I

It relates to a recent SISI BAKBAK remix of Hold On by SBTRKT

This remix has recently causing some confusion in the press for Sisi BakBak being a possible alias for Thom Yorke.

Consequence Of Sound gives the following info:

SBTRKT will release his new single “Hold On” digitally on February 21st, and as a limited edition 12” in a deluxe lenticular sleeve on May 8th. It comes backed by the instrumental ”Rise to Freedom”, along with a remix of “Hold On” attributed to Sisi BakBak, who (through powers of Sherlock-like deduction) is probably Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.

According to KEXP’s Cheryl Waters, who premiered the track, the remixer is soon playing Seattle’s Key Arena (that’s where Radiohead is playing in April.) Also, as Pitchfork points out, BBC’s Rob da Bank tweeted (via P4k): “listening to the thom yorke mix of @SBTRKT for the 18th time…unbeatable!”” So there you go.

( Source : Check Out SBTRKT Hold On SISI BAKBAK Remix )

As yet there has been no official word to deny or confirm that Thom is Sisi Bakbak

Chieftan Mews has a long history of tweeting messages directly related to the band (even if in a round about fashion). From this we can take the message as confirmation that Sisi Bakbak is indeed Thom Yorke who has a long history of involvement with DJs including work with Modeselektor, UNKLE, DJ Shadow, Flying Lotus, Burial, Four-Tet and MF Doom.

Thom also organised the TKOL RMX 1234567 remix collection of The King of Limbs.

In somewhat-related news Modeselektor will be releasing a special Deluxe Tour edition of Monkeytown on the 16 March 2012 which features a additional bonus track co-written by Thom Yorke. It may be Dull Hull from the B-Side of the limited edition Shipwreck single (which you can listen to here) or it could be something new.

** UPDATE 20-March 2012 : it is Dull Hull, you can read the full tracklisting here **

While the first edition of Modeselektor’s third studio album “Monkeytown” was already far from standard, this new and updated deluxe package offers an even more extensive collectors item.

Released in the middle of the second leg of the album tour, this Deluxe Tour Edition of the album features an entire bonus cd filled with all instrumentals from the album and an additional bonus track co-written by Thom Yorke (Radiohead). The bonus DVD comes with all 3 official videos for the songs “Shipwreck” with Thom Yorke, “Evil Twin” and “Berlin” feat. Miss Platnum as well as extensive live footage. Filmed at the Warehouse Project in Manchester you will find 7 songs from the live show as well as a 20min interview added as additional video bonus material.

Alltogether about 3 hours of Modeselektor entertainement.

( Source: Monkeytown Records )

According to their website the Deluxe Tour Edition is limited to only 3000 copies, you can order it here.

Now for the rest of the tweets!

Pre-tense could be read as a reference to ‘The Present Tense’ a currently unreleased song that made it’s debut at the 2009 Latitude Festival being played solo by Thom Yorke. A fan favourite you can listen to it here.

Whoopie has two meanings, one is to celebrate in a (usually) drunken fashion, the second is to have sex. Considering Thom Yorke’s reaction to people ahem.. ‘making woopie’ to Radiohead it’s more likely to be the former then the latter.

blindfold is a reference to Running Blind the title of Phillip Selway’s recent E.P.

Mew’s had previously retweeted a message from SandbagUK informing of a limited edition release of the E.P. signed by the man himself, It is now sold out but you can still buy Phil’s debut album Familial here.

The second of the two tweets appears to be about computer games.

‘patria’ is a Latin word for ‘Homeland’ or ‘Fatherland’.

February 23rd was the release date for ‘Wargame: European Escalation’ described as ‘a real-time strategy video game developed by Eugen Systems set in the years 1975-1985.’

Wiki gives the following:

It features large maps up to 150 square kilometres in size. It can have up to 100 million scenery objects. Players can command 361 unique units. [3]. Playable factions include the Warsaw Pact which is subdivided into the Soviet Union, Communist Poland, East Germany, and Czechoslovakia. On the other side is NATO, which is subivided into the United States of America, United Kingdom, France and West Germany. Each country has its own arsenal of units, and players can choose various units from the four subfactions of the side they are playing on, unlocking better units through game progression.

Gamespot has a good range of coverage of it Here

While Mew’s seems to be referencing that game in particular it doesn’t actually mean he’s played it. Many websites and gaming platforms such as Steam present advertisements for upcoming games that appear when logging in.

For example is a screenshot of the game advertised in Steam’s main page on the 5th of March.

Screenshot of Wargame: European Escalation advertised on Steam.

Previously on the 3rd of June 2010 Jonny Greenwood posted a Office Chart to Dead Air Space unique in listing a selection of Games instead of music which he addressed to “all the nerds who are marveling, like me, at Red Dead Redemption”

Red Dead Redemption is the title of a game by Rockstar San Diego released exclusively on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the 21st of May 2010 in the UK. Awarded numerous Game of the Year titles it’s considered to be a modern classic and raised the bar for open world games.

(Source: Wikipedia )

Wiki describes it as:

Set in 1911, during the decline of the American Old West. The game follows John Marston, a former outlaw, while he sets out to hunt down his former gang members. Marston’s wife and son are taken hostage by the government in ransom for his services as a bounty hunter. Having no other choice, he sets out to bring his three former gang members to justice.

You can read (or watch) a review of it here.

For the curious the rest of Jonny’s list was:

Braid (various)
Marathon (Mac)
Goldeneye (N64)
Elite (BBC Micro)
Cave Story (various)
Ico (PS2)
Red Dead Redemption (PS3)
Zelda Ocarina of Time (N64)
Zelda Twighlight Princess (Wii)
Half Life 1 and 2 (Mac, PS3)

RT: @nigelgod: please god – let the weather get better for glastonbury

Jun 18, 2011:

RT: @nigelgod: please god – let the weather get better for glastonbury @LeoJThompson

Mews retweeted this tweet from Nigel Godrich regarding hopes for better weather for the 2011 Glastonbury festival held on Wednesday the 22nd to Sunday the 26th of June 2011. Radiohead performed a “surprise” set at the festival performing on the Park Stage, their first live performance since the release of The King of Limbs and the first performance of The Daily Mail with the full band. During the show Thom admitted they they where only playing for free tickets to the festival.

Sadly Nigel’s prayers where not answered as The Guardian describes the weather during the set to be ‘pissing down’ in a review of the show.

The day before the Glastonbury was due to start Mews took to Facebook posting a video from Youtube along with a festive message on what would have been the 21st in the UK:

22 June 2011 at 06:40

Chieftan Mews
Don’t mess with the paranormal. These rocks built the druids, not the other way around. Enjoy your summer solstice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhkGATrm6zY

Stonehenge summer solstice 2011
Filmed at The Summer Solstice festival at English Heritage site Stonehenge. A man tries to climb the rocks and falls into the crowd.

Interestingly Mews must have found that video not that long after it was uploaded as the 2011 Summer Solstice festival falls on the 21st of June, the same day he posted it to Facebook.

The Guardian carried a report about the festival with a photo of another man climbing the rocks they give the following information about the event:

The summer solstice is meant to be a night and dawn of peace, love and amazement. But not all of those attending the celebrations at Stonehenge entered into the spirit of the event.

Druids, pagans and revellers watched as two men, one shirtless, staged a fist fight at the ancient monument in Wiltshire.

While the majority of the 18,000 people who attended the solstice celebrations were well-behaved, 20 arrests and almost 50 drug seizures were made.

Photographer David Hedges, who witnessed the fight, said: “They were sparring for a few minutes before they really started throwing punches.”

Spectators surrounded the pair and a couple tried to break it up before the police arrived.

The 20 arrests included 11 for drugs offences and five for public order offences. Superintendent Gavin Williams of Wiltshire police said most of the attendees “came to see the sunrise in the spirit of the event. Although it was disappointing that some individuals chose to bring drugs with them, they were dealt with robustly.”

(Source: Summer Solstice Celebrated at Stonehenge )

Amazingly it seems nobody got in trouble for climbing the rocks though Karma( or the paranormal) it seemed managed to get one of them. But it’s certainly not like any other historical site of cultural significance is routinely climbed on by visitors against the wishes of locals.. oops!.

Five hours after posting the video Mew’s added a comment to the post after two fans started having a argument in the comements. He provided a link to the videoclip for ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends’ by War from the album by the same name, and added the following message:

22 June 2011 at 12:03

Mews is trying to sleep. Why do you two have to wake him up? Take a dose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5FfJ89rGPc

You can listen to Why Can’t We Be Friends? Here

Wiki shares the following tidbits on the song:

Recorded in 1974 and released on United Artists Records in June 1975. The title song reached #8 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The original LP edition came with a poster. Two singles from the album were released: “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” backed with “In Mazatlan”, and “Low Rider” backed with “So”. Both A-sides were nominated for the Grammy Awards of 1976.

The song had been used in a wide range of films and television including Dazed and Confused, BASEketball, Lethal Weapon 4 and a 1996 episode of The Simpsons.

@ChieftanMews: @nigelgod that buck, took me out of the final cut so I took Supercollider & some juicy footage before being banished to the Zigg. Stuck.Help

These are the first of a series of ongoing tweets where Chieftan Mews states that he was stuck in the Ziggurat with footage taken from The King of Limbs – Live From the Basement.

He accuses Nigel Godrich of removing him from the film and reviles that there is a performance of Supercollider missing from the version shown on television and online. This later proves to be correct when on November 9 Radiohead released The King of Limbs – Live From the Basement on Bluray/DVD with Supercollider as a bonus feature.

http://www.the-ziggurat.com is the web address for The Byzantine Ziggurat a abandoned part of the Radiohead website.
The Memory Hole on Radiohead’s Website describes it as thus:

This was the Strategic Defence Initiative. A ponderous structure stuck in hyperspace which we are not sure what to do with at the moment. But one day, it’s time will come, of that there is no doubt.

Since 2008 it simply contains a looped flash video of coloured blocks that was used as the background for InRainbows.com which hosted the ‘pay what you want’ store for In Rainbows. As of May 2011 the site is no longer available but you can view it here via the Web Archive.

On August 1st Servo uploaded a copy of the video from The Ziggurat to youtube and posted it to Chieftan Mew’s wall on Facebook.

Screenshot of Mew's Reply to a question on Facebook, August 1st, 2011.

Chieftan Mews replied on the 3rd of August with the following message:

My face emerges at the 30 second mark at the lower/central portion of the screen and then disappears a short time later. Please call a plumber or a lumberjack immediately.

( The Lumberjack is probably a reference to a classic Monty Python Sketch entitled The Lumberjack Song which continues the ‘Woods/Trees’ theme. For any poor souls who have never heard it you can watch it on youtube Here. )

Mews replied again to another fan with more details on the 5th of August:

Screenshot of 0:36 in The Zigguart video as posted to Youtube by Servo.

Looking to the bottom-left part of the screen you can see the shape of a head (The dark blue is hair and green for the face)

Starting from the 5th of August 2011 Mews sent a series of weekly tweets counting down from #10/10 to #1/10

On the 7th of October Mews tweeted that “Like you, once again, I am a free fugitive of life.” and followed by the statement that he had been “set free by Supercollider.”

Recently in January 2012 a link to the Ziggurat was added to Dead Air Space’s list of Links with the following note:

radiohead.com/Archive/Site8/z
found this while looking for something else.. it is now my screen saver

Servo claims that the film loop on The Ziggurat has been changed and is different to the version he posted to Youtube and Facebook last year as it no longer contains the face at the 36 second mark. You can read his theory on this here at Ims Menoo.

The Byzantine Ziggurat itself has a long and interesting history.

A Ziggurat is a massive structures built in the ancient Mesopotamian valley and western Iranian plateau, having the form of a terraced step pyramid of successively receding stories or levels. Wiki also gives the following:

Notable ziggurats include the Great Ziggurat of Ur near Nasiriyah, Iraq; the Ziggurat of Aqar Quf near Baghdad, Iraq; Chogha Zanbil in Khūzestān, Iran; and Sialk near Kashan, Iran.

According to Herodotus, at the top of each ziggurat was a shrine, although none of these shrines has survived. One practical function of the ziggurats was a high place on which the priests could escape rising water that annually inundated lowlands and occasionally flooded for hundreds of miles, as for example the 1967 flood. Another practical function of the ziggurat was for security. Since the shrine was accessible only by way of three stairways, a small number of guards could prevent non-priests from spying on the rituals at the shrine on top of the ziggurat, such as cooking of sacrificial food and burning of carcasses of sacrificial animals. Each ziggurat was part of a temple complex that included a courtyard, storage rooms, bathrooms, and living quarters, around which a city was built

You can read more about them here.

Byzantine is the name of The Byzantine Empire.

Wiki explains it as the following:

The Byzantine Empire (or Byzantium) was the Eastern Roman Empire during the periods of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, centered on the capital of Constantinople. Known simply as the “Roman Empire” (Greek: Βασιλεία Ῥωμαίων, Basileia Rhōmaiōn)[2] or Romania (Ῥωμανία) to its inhabitants and neighbours, it was the direct continuation of the Ancient Roman State and maintained Roman state traditions.[3] Byzantium is today distinguished from ancient Rome proper insofar as it was oriented towards Greek culture, characterised by Christianity rather than Roman paganism and was predominantly Greek-speaking rather than Latin-speaking.

“The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Volume II” Appears on Page 2 of the Amnesiac Book.

During the Hail To the Thief era The Byzantine Ziggurat looked like this:

Logging in you where provided with a chatroom as part of digital-landfill.co.uk which today also shows the In Rainbows video loop.

Before 2005 The Byzantine Ziggurat was home to the Waste Game which was online treasure hunt of sorts for Amnesiac containing 3 chapters of which only the first two where ever run. A record of the game can be found at Waste-Game-News.com Mike gives the following introduction:

What is the “Waste Game” or the “Byzantine Ziggurat?” It all started like this. At the time, Radiohead had put up a new website, and this was a page called the Byzantine Ziggurat. People were freaking out about how to figure out the password.

And by freaking out, I mean some were going totally out of their minds. I was one of them. I started keeping a copy of everything to do with the game, as did others, some of which helped me collect stuff, and this website was born. While the game was still going, this site helped others keep track of the latest news.

the waste game (Byzantine Ziggurat) was designed and executed by Radiohead,
Stanley Donwood, and many other associates.

..Sounds rather familiar doesn’t it?

Surprisingly it seems the game had two winners! Waste Game News describes the Chapter 2 Prize Kit as including “a Certificate of Byzantine Zigguration signed by the band, two posters, a backstage pass from the 2001 Oxford show, Zigguration Tests taken by each member of the band, and a video of the 2001 Dublin show.”

The Zigguration Tests where a written exam written by Stanley Donwood and apparently administered by Mel from W.A.S.T.E. All five band members sat them but only Ed’s exam paper has been made public. You can check it out Here along with photos of the rest of the prizes.

As of May 2005 Radiohead no longer maintains the waste-game.com domain name, it appears that Chapter 3 titled ‘Playing Zeus’ morphed into what was to become The Scrapbook on the Radiohead website as Mike states that in a conversation with maxk from W.A.S.T.E on April 5 2003 that Chapter 3 was to have 2,700 rooms(pages). There’s quite a few old websites from fans who where working to solve the game so best bet is to do a web search for ‘The Byzantine Ziggurat’.

Greek Mythology has been a reoccurring theme for Stanley Donwood’s artwork since 2000 and Mew’s has used Greek in a tweet (My bucks, must I go out on a limb here and say more is revealing at Ελληνική οδός? That man: ims menooo! Juicy pre-watching. Beware you not!) relating to Stanley.

However in this case Mew’s seems to be tweeting more about the status of Ziggurat being ‘abandoned’ asking Stanley Donwood in a later tweet if he would toss a difficult artwork to the Zig. ( @StanleyDonwood I see you have finally cut “Lost Angeles”. Are you going to toss that into the Ziggurat too? ). On the 22nd of September he responded to a question on Facebook asking where he was:

Mew's reply to a question on Facebook, 22nd of September.

Question from Fan: where ya at mewsy?
Answer from Mews: In your garbage can

Therefore we can assume that Mew’s sees the Zig as something of a trash for abandoned projects.

#7/10: No more hiding: “The atom had a positive, a negative & a neutral” & “Later for the date than the hadron collider” & “I am open.” ??

Aug 25, 2011:

@ChieftanMews: #7/10: No more hiding: “The atom had a positive, a negative & a neutral” & “Later for the date than the hadron collider” & “I am open.” ??

This was the seventh of 10 tweets Mews sent out counting down from 10 to 1. Each where phrased as a question and usually paired with a date for when the answer was expected to be received by.

‘Open. No More Hiding’ is a phrase Mews had previously changed his profile to after the release of The Universal Sigh.

The phrase ‘Open. No More Hiding’ appears on page 7 of The Universal Sigh in large letters. You can read it here on the E-Universal Sigh.

“The atom had a positive, a negative & a neutral” is from Dimethyltryptamine by Jay Electronica from the Style Wars EP. You can read the rest of the lyrics here.

“Later for the date than the hadron collider” is from Gazzillion Ear by MF DOOM from the Gazzillion Ear E.P., you can read the lyrics here.

Thom Yorke provided a remix of the song in 2009 and has recently corroborated again with MF DOOM under the alias of SISI BAKBAK.

The last piece of lyric “I am open” is from Supercollider.

Atom’s are of course a name for the base unit of matter. Each contains a central nucleus of positively charged protons and neutral neutrons which are surrounded by a cloud of negative charged electrons. Interestingly enough Hydrogen is the only atom to be not made up in this way as it only has a single neutron and no protons at all.

The usual diagrams you’ll find will show something like this..even though they’re um.. not 100% accurate:

( Source: Post Everything.com )

It’s also part of the name Atoms for Peace which was formed in 2009 by Thom Yorke, Nigel Godrich and Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

The hadron collider is the Large Hadron Collider (LRH) the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator taking 10 years to complete and had a number of significant delays. The LRH was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) who are amongst Mew’s followers.

You can read more about it here

Like the LRH Supercollider was late and missed out on being part of The King of Limbs as the band where still working on it in March, a good month after The King of Limbs and during a period of very little press and communication from the band (except for Mews). It was later released as a 12″ single alongside The Butcher for Record Store Day 2011 in the UK, Japan and America.

On the 19th of April W.A.S.T.E started sending out emails to everyone who had purchased The King of Limbs with a link to download Supercollider and The Bucher along with the following message from the band.

Thank you – Merci – Gracias – Grazie – Dankeschön – Obrigado – Gui lah hui te ha – Ashoge – Shukran – Tsikomo – M goi – Tak – Dank u – Vinaka – Aabhar – Köszönöm – Go raibh maith agaibh – Arigato – Tashakkur – Dziekuje – Gestena – Hvala – Tack – Tesekkür ederim – Spasibo – Dêkuji – Sas efharisto ……

Right, that’s most of you covered, apologies to those we’ve missed out … ok, so here are two tracks for your listening pleasure:
Supercollider and The Butcher. We released these as a limited edition 2 track 12inch vinyl to mark Independent Record Store Day last Saturday, April 16 … so in case you missed out and didn’t get a copy here they are.
It’s a thank you for being SO supportive of what we do …

p.s. This is not part of a new loyalty points scheme, a Radiohead clubcard or even an air miles redeemable reward type thing…
It is just a big old-fashioned thank you!

Hope your Spring/Autumn is good.

FYI… ‘The Butcher’ was recorded and mixed during ‘The King of Limbs’ sessions, but we couldn’t make it work on the album; ‘Supercollider’ was started during those sessions and finished off in March of this year.

Continuing with the ‘late’ theme Radiohead posted on Dead Air Space in July regarding a delay in having Radiohead-From the Basement broadcast in the UK due to BBC Worldwide (who had partnered with the band in the project) cancelled the July 1st screening. While MTV and Palladia did broadcast it in June the film had its television debut in Spain.

25 years. Jericho. Friday. Woods. Saturday. Living. Project. Phil’s harmonica. Ago. Carrots&sticks. Bluebook. Mobile Devices & Birds Chirp.

Sep 8, 2011:

@ChieftanMews: 25 years. Jericho. Friday. Woods. Saturday. Living. Project. Phil’s harmonica. Ago. Carrots&sticks. Bluebook. Mobile Devices & Birds Chirp.

Unscrambled you could read it as ’25 Years. Ago. (this?) Saturday. (On a) Friday. Jericho (Tavern with) Phil’s harmonica.’ in rather a Cluedo who/where/how style.

2011 marks the 25th anniversary of On a Friday’s first gig at the Jericho Tavern a pub and music venue in Oxford. Jonny Greenwood originally joined the band on harmonica before playing keyboard and ending up as the lead guitarist.

On a Friday is of course the name Radiohead used until 1991 when they signed to EMI.

September 8, 1986 is not a Saturday it’s a Monday, nor is September 8, 2011. This suggests that Radiohead’s first gig must have been on Wednesday September 10th, 1986 however finding any source to confirm has been difficult as most sites only say the band performed in the 2nd half of that year (well except some that insist it was 1987 pft).

The rest of the tweet is more modern.

Carrots&sticks. is of course a idiom for the idea of combining a reward and punishment in order for a certain behaviour.

It appears on a Kid-A era tour poster titled ‘Fear Stalks the Land’ along with the line ‘Mobiles Chirping’ from Idioteque, Abbatoir noises and ‘Our Name is Legion’ a which Mew’s has also tweeted.

(Source: Rockfeedback.com)

it also appears in artwork from the additional hidden art booklet as “CHECKS AND BALANCES CARROTS AND STICKS” in 1st edition Kid-A cds reprinted on a T-shirt as SEX WORK DEATH in 2000 and in Dead Children Playing a picture book by Stanley Donwood & Dr. Tchock (Thom Yorke) featuring artwork from OK Computer though to Hail To the Thief.

Bluebook is of course a nod towards Facebook’s logo.

Birds Chirps is another way of saying Birds Tweet ala Twitter.

and Mobile Devices.. all three ways to keep in touch.

Woods relates to Bad Woods and Twisted Woods which are both sets of prints by Stanley Donwood, the first forms part of the artwork for The King of Limbs with the second being the artwork for These Are My Twisted Words.

On Facebook Mews got himself into a bit of a conversation when a fan replied to his question with the answer “25 years ago at the jericho tavern… on a friday?”, he accused them of being a bot for replying so quickly.

Bot’s are a name for software that runs a automated set of tasks usually at high speed. Such tasks may be to analyse websites such as the ‘web crawlers’ utilized by search engines like Google, for fraud/crime or to perform some level of basic AI such as ‘Chatbots’ which aim to mimic the experience of talking to a real person.

Later he responds to another fan with “When I cry, lightning strikes. Reality has now become a fantasy. I have proof. Meanwhile. Wham chose life. Farewell and be alert or not.”

The line ‘When I cry, Lighting strikes’ may be a nod towards Lightning Crashes by Live from Throwing Copper, it was released in the UK in 1996.

‘Wham chose life’ refers to the ‘CHOOSE LIFE’ t-shirts worn by WHAM when performing ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go Go’ on BBC’s Top of the Pops in 1984.

Finally each of the Facebook messages is signed off with ‘be alert or not.’ suggesting that Mew’s may, or may not be active again soon.

I was set free by Supercollider. My first line of business was to make sure that those two don’t appear on Late Night on Monday.

Oct 1, 2011:

RT: @inkybrown: I asked C&P for a statement about @ChieftanMews . Philip said no comment. Colin said he’s disgusting and he’s not supposed to talk about it

@inkybrown I was set free by Supercollider. My first line of business was to make sure that those two don’t appear on Late Night on Monday.

Mew’s first re-tweeted then replied to Inkybrown who managed to ask Colin and Phil about Mews after one of the Roseland Ballroom Shows in New York.

Since July 6th Mew’s has stated that he was stuck in the Ziggurat ( www.the-ziggurat.com ) with footage of Supercollider missing from The King of Limbs – Live at the Basement.

It seems Mew’s got his revenge as only Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to perform Give Up The Ghost, the episode was screened on Monday October 3rd in the US.

You can watch the performance here.
