Who is Chieftan Mews?

“Please don’t fall in love with me. I can’t repay you. All my love is used up… On me.”

Chieftan Mews is a mysterious, sinister figure who first graced the world in 2003 as the host of The Greatest Lying Mouth of All Time, a Four Part online series broadcasting on Radiohead.tv as part of the lead up to the release of Hail To the Thief.

Despite only introducing and making the end of each episode Chieftan Mews lived on to return in 2004 where he defaced the official Radiohead website due to a alleged pay dispute, sold his personal effects on ebay to raise funds and disappeared without a trace after the release of The Greatest Lying Mouth of All Time on DVD.

Or so we thought…

2007 saw his return with fresh footage introducing the Thumbs Down Webcast on Radiohead.tv in celebration of In Rainbows being released. He has also been mentioned on Dead Air Space under the post ’1 2 3 4 Chieftain Mews Anyone’ by Ed.

While he has not returned to Radiohead.tv since 2010 Chieftan Mews has secretly snuck onto twitter in 2009 making his account older then any of the offical Radiohead twitter accounts.

The account appears to have been little used until early 2011 when on the 14th of February he suddenly returned to twitter posting 5 messages within 24 hours ahead of any official announcements. Since then he has continued to post messages to Twitter often supporting or ahead of tweets from the band themselves. This has led to the tweets being something of a ‘conspiracy magnet’ for fans awaiting news following the otherwise low key release of The King of Limbs. Without any kind of official announcement, press or word from the band and lead to the creation of The King of Limbs Part 2 which has gone on to be quoted in sources as diverse as Rolling Stone Magazine and The Guardian.

Using Twitter and later Facebook Chieftan Mews is continuing a campaign of trolling (for lack of a better word) the Radiohead fanbase with obscure tweets, photos, films and messages (some of which are sent directly one-on-one). It has now been over a year since the release of The King of Limbs and Mew’s is still with us, it seems that why and what will happen next is anybodies guess.

@ChieftenMews is on Twitter.

Mews joined Facebook in March 2011 you can become a ahem.. ‘Friend’ of him as The Chieftan Mews

He also is a member of The Universal Sigh group on Flickr.

You can watch and read transcripts of all his original appearances on Radiohead.tv Here.

At this point he is not known to have any other accounts. All other Chieftan Mews Facebook, Twitter or Youtube accounts etc. belong to fans.
